CREATING A QUADRUPED RIG FOR PRODUCTION course. This course provides a professional guide to making quadruped rigs and will help you improve the quality of your rigs. In this 6.5-hour workshop, Pawan Sarakhan shares the tips and tricks he’s learned working with professional animators with experience in producing special effects. The rigging system presented in this workshop was developed in collaboration with Chalermful Watanavongtrakul, Senior Animator at Framestore, and Colin McEvoy, Head of Animation at DNEG. The system has been optimized through extensive testing to meet the highest production standards while being user-friendly for animators.

This workshop starts from the basics and goes step by step to make the final rigs of the main body. A key component of this workshop is building a realistic backbone that you’ll see as the final output in the special effects production – all without the need for any plugins. You’ll learn how to use a helper Python script to create the overall control rig, as well as how to build an IK spline system with realistic behavior to push and pull the chest and pelvis so that all components move together efficiently. Pavon also teaches how to create FK/IK switch settings for limbs, IK tension settings, and the dual FK control structure technique for toe adjustments. You will learn the limb lock technique, automatic scapular targeting adjustment, and the Pawn Abdominal trick using the cMuscleSmartConstraint node. He also covers skin weighting techniques using Maya skin tools. The model used and tested by the talented Colin McAvoy is included in this workshop.
