Advanced PCB Design with KiCad 9 course. The instructor has recorded a series of sessions in which he redesigns his ESP32 board to fix the problems of the first prototype. New sessions are at the end of the course. The sound and light sensor wiring has been changed to both use ADC1, a variable resistor has been integrated into the sound amplifier for adjustable gain, and the photosensor wiring has been modified with proper capacitor placement. The PCB layout has also been updated by enlarging the buttons, correcting the track routing, adding a ferrite bead to reduce noise, and updating the footprints and 3D models of the components.

This course will teach you the complete KiCad 9 and teach you how to design a fully functional IoT PCB from start to finish. In this comprehensive, project-based course, you will go through the complete process of designing, testing, and building a four-layer PCB using the latest tools and techniques in KiCad 9. By the end of the course, you will have a fully designed and tested ESP32-based IoT board, along with the skills to take on your own advanced PCB design projects. This course will help you create complex designs using the tools available in KiCad software. You will learn how to use KiCad’s signal analysis tools and how to solve design problems using KiCad’s electrical rule checking and design tools. In addition, you will learn how to prepare your designs for production with NextPCB or other manufacturers. You will also gain practical skills to test and validate PCB performance using an oscilloscope and multimeter. This course will address the challenges and best practices of IoT PCB design. You will learn how to use best practices for power distribution, signal integrity, and component layout.

What you will learn:

  • Designing a complete four-layer PCB with KiCad 9.
  • Create schematics, assign footprints, and route tracks for high-speed signals such as SPI, I2C, and USB.
  • Implement power and ground planes, copper zones, and via stitching for signal integrity.
  • Troubleshoot and fix design issues using KiCad’s Electrical Rules Check (ERC) and Design Rules Check (DRC).
  • Perform Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews with NextPCB to ensure production-ready designs.
  • Testing and validating key PCB components such as SD card interface, flash memory, sensors, microphone, and OLED display.
  • Analyze analog and digital signals using test scripts, oscilloscopes, and KiCad simulation tools.
  • Techniques to ensure signal integrity through proper ground and power plane design.
  • Methods for troubleshooting and fixing common PCB design problems using KiCad tools.
  • The process of preparing PCB designs for production with NextPCB or other manufacturers.
  • Practical skills for testing and validating PCB performance using an oscilloscope and multimeter.
  • Insights into IoT PCB design challenges and best practices.

This course is suitable for people who:

  • Electronics enthusiasts who want to design advanced PCB projects.
  • Electrical and electronics engineers looking for practical experience in PCB design.
  • Embedded systems developers working with IoT devices.
  • STEM educators looking to introduce PCB design into their curriculum.
