USB Drive Letter Manager (USBDLM) runs as a Windows service and allows users to automatically and customarily assign drive letters to USB devices connected to their computer. By default, the Windows operating system assigns the first available drive letter to new removable devices. This may cause conflicts with network drives or local drives. While it is possible to manually change drive letters via the Control Panel, this program does this automatically and intelligently to avoid problems and time wasted. By running USBDLM as a Windows service, even users without administrator privileges can use it and manage drive letters.
This service constantly checks the drive letters of connected drives and ensures that they do not conflict with network drives. The program is configured by editing a text file in INI format. A sample file is also provided for ease of use. Although the initial configuration of the program may take a while and may seem difficult for novice users, USBDLM is a useful tool for controlling how Windows assigns drive letters.
Program features and functions
- Ability to assign custom drive letters to USB storage devices, reserve specific drive letters to prevent them from being used by local drives, and hide or delete specific drives.
- Ability to display a popup window containing the drive letter assigned to the connected device.
- Supports managing specific conditions where a drive letter must be assigned based on specific criteria (for example, the drive size is greater than a certain value).
- Ability to manage card reader drive letters. Normally, Windows assigns a drive letter to each card reader slot. USBDLM allows you to not assign a drive letter to a card reader when there is no card inserted, and to create a new drive letter only when a card is detected.
- Ability to assign a drive letter from a list of new default drive letters, based on various criteria such as: active user, drive type, connection type (USB, FireWire), USB port, volume label, size, and more.
- Ability to assign a drive letter to a specific USB drive by placing an INI file on the same drive.
- Ability to define autorun events based on various criteria.
- Ability to check and ensure that the assigned drive letter is not being used by a network share.
