In this course, we will combine several tools and services to create a workable and easily replicable server that can support a small enterprise. Tools and services taught in this course:

  • Ansible: for server configuration and service deployment
  • Let’s Encrypt (certbot): to get TLS certificates and auto-renewal
  • VPN (WireGuard): For secure access to our services
  • Docker with docker-compose: for easy deployment of our applications and services
  • MariaDB: A fork of MySQL

  • iRedMail: The email server we will use to send and receive notifications.
  • Zulip: an open-source chat and collaboration software that can be launched personally (an alternative to Slack or Microsoft Teams)
  • Traefik (reverse proxy and TLS termination proxy) with Docker and file providers: a single entry point for our services with automatic TLS certificates
  • Pi-hole: DNS level ad blocker
  • Nextcloud: email, calendar, documents, photos, etc. It even has a built-in code editor.
  • checkmk: monitoring solution

  • GitLab: Git server, CI/CD, dedicated Docker registry in GitLab and…
  • backup-checker: With this project, we’ll showcase everything we’ve created! We create a Python program that compares the final backups to the desired list of backups, uses GitLab’s CI/CD to build a Docker image, sends it to our own Docker registry, runs it on our server via GitLab Runner, and Sends a notification to our Zulip server.
  • Upgrade scripts for services running on Docker.
  • Upgrade iRedMail
